Bodmin Railway

During a visit to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway the majority of staff on duty you will see are volunteers – the driver, the fireman, the booking office clerk, the signalman, the guard and the shop staff. What you may not notice is the large number of ‘backroom’ staff who carry out the restoration and maintenance work that helps to keep the railway in first class condition.

Our volunteer staff are of all ages (over 14) and backgrounds, male and female, but all share a common aim – to do their bit towards ensuring the continued operation of the BWR for future generations to enjoy. Some joined as school children, others when they retired. Some have particular skills, others are totally unskilled. All are equally welcome and have an important part to play in the continued future success of the railway.

Bodmin Railway

The railway is maintained and operated by its' volunteers with the support of a small staff of dedicated and very professional men and women. They provide all the help and expertise required to enable us to be so successful.

Every aspect of operating and maintaining the railway is undertaken – station duties, booking office, shop and buffet, train crews (both steam and diesel, including drivers, firemen, guards, and ticket inspectors), Permanent Way and Signal & Telegraph work, and the maintenance, repair, and restoration of carriages, wagons, and locomotives. All these activities and more are undertaken with the enthusiastic support and guidance of our full time professionals……and on site we are all equals working together.

Without the volunteers the railway could simply not operate, so whether you wield a paint brush or a sweeping brush, a hammer and chisel or a screwdriver, a computer or a till, we need you. Your help is valuable, so why not come along and share in the satisfaction of working in the company of a team of like minded achievers?

There are always vacancies in all departments and new volunteers are always warmly welcomed to the small, friendly team who keeps the Railway’s wheels turning. To be a volunteer, you MUST be a member of the Bodmin Railway Preservation Society (BRPS).
