50042 was purchased by the Bodmin & Wenford Diesel Group in November 1991, from Laira depot in Plymouth, where it had languished since being withdrawn in October 1990. It arrived at Bodmin on 10 March 1992 behind 37671, having been hauled from Laira to Lostwithiel by 37673.
Restoration to get the loco running consisted of the replacement of stolen traction and ETH cables, freeing up the seized power unit and turbo chargers, and restoring the wrecked cabs. The engine was started for the first time on 12 Aug 1992, and moved under its own power on 25 Nov 1992. Since then, major work has included changing the ETH generator, and changing a traction motor. Recent work has seen the rusty cabsides replaced, and new roof panels made and fitted.
TRIUMPH is used regularly on the steep gradients at Bodmin, and is able to be used on full power when suitable loads are provided, usually at gala weekends. It is available for driver experience courses at various off peak times of the year (as are all our locos including the DMU).
