We're looking for a two or possibly three new people to join the Bodmin & Wenford Railway team in the roles of Cafe Assistant at Bodmin Parkway and Train Cleaner at Bodmin General. Please take a look at the information about each of the roles below. We look forward to hearing from you.

Bodmin Parkway Cafe Assistant

We need one or possibly two hard working, enthusiastic team members who can help run our busy Parkway Station cafe.

You will be passionate about customer service and have a proactive attitude towards providing our steam railway, mailine rail travellers and locals with food, drinks and snacks from a simple menu. You will work on a daily basis, preparing hot and cold food. You will be responsible for both monitoring and delivering quality, attractive and clean retail display and complying with health and safety, food hygiene and licensing requirements. You will be responsible for managing stock, opening and closing and cashing up.

Opening hours are 7.30am to 3.45pm Monday to Saturday and 9.15am to 4.30pm on Sunday. Flexibility on earlier starts or later finishes should be a consideration when applying.

Starting immediately, there are four to five days available which could be covered by one or two people. The rate of pay is £7.90 an hour. Flexibility in terms of start and finish times and availability is particularly important.


  • To be responsible for the operation of the Station Café at Bodmin Parkway during each day worked, with particular regard to safety, efficiency, cleanliness and profitability.
  • To be clean and smart in appearance, and be clearly identified as a member of staff.
  • To sign on and off duty on the approved form.
  • To ensure the café is open throughout the stated opening hours.
  • During the course of each day the café is open to:
    • Make sandwiches
    • Prepare and cook snacks to orders received from customers
    • Serve customers politely
    • Collect dirty plates, mugs etc and wash up
    • Ensure the crockery etc is cleaned and stored correctly
    • Keep the drinks cooler, and cakes and chocolate shelves well stocked
  • At the end of each day the café is open to:
    • Cash-up using the correct procedures
    • Clean all floors and seating areas
    • Clean the appliances
    • Before departure, ensure the café is left clean and tidy.

Train Cleaner

As a Train Cleaner at Bodmin General Station for the Summer season, the successful applicant will be part of a very small team of paid staff at the Railway, including one other cleaner. Along with the Railway's volunteers, the team work hard to make sure that our charming 1950s Cornish branch line station and heritage steam and diesel trains are looking their best, and are clean, tidy and welcoming for visitors at this busy time of year.

Starting immediately and employed until October, the Train Station Cleaner will typically work between 7 and 10 hours a week in total. The rate of pay is £7.50 an hour, or NMW. Flexibility in terms of start and finish times and availability is particularly important.


  • Remove rubbish from all bins and carry it to the waste compound. Replenish the waste bags.
  • Empty the glass wheelie bin on a daily basis unless excessively heavy in which case leave beside the Cleaning Shed and advise the office that it needs emptying
  • Brush all seats and floors
  • Wet wipe all floors, then dry mop.
  • Clean all toilets and wash basins with anti-bacterial detergent.
  • Clean toilet brushes in a bucket of anti bacterial detergent
  • Wipe all toilet compartment windowsills, shelves and door handles with anti-bacterial detergent
  • Monitor and top up as required the toilet paper towel supply
  • Monitor and top up as required the toilet paper supply. One roll is to be in use and one spare in each toilet
  • Monitor and top up as required the soap supply. Two bars are to be available in each toilet
  • Remove rubbish from the toilet bins and replace bin liners as necessary
  • Wipe all Formica tables with multi-surface cleaner
  • Wipe all others with wood polish
  • Clean any obvious or heavy fouling of windows on a daily basis


  • Vacuum clean all upholstery and floors. Clear behind the heaters and any other dirt traps.
  • Scrub the stainless steel sinks with Brillo until shiny
  • Clean the internal surfaces of all windows with detergent/glass cleaner
  • Clean the inside of the RMB including clean the surfaces and sink with anti-bacterial detergent, clean the floor and empty the bin


  • From time to time, it may be necessary to undertake other tasks as directed by the Railway Manager/Office Administrator.
